Old Bogambara prison is an important land mark in Kandy city. At present jail has been shifted to another place but this vast structure is remaining in the mid of Kandy city.The Bogambara Prison was a 13-acre maximum security prison and second largest prison in Sri lanka..The prison  was built in 1876 by the British-Ceylon government .It is one of the two prisons in Sri Lanka where the death penalty was implemented. . The building is one of the oldest existing building in the world heritage city of Kandy, and is considered to be a rich archaeological landmark. It is also believed the construction of the Prison has been done similar to that of the Bastile.
